The Las Vegas Raiders made the right decision to move on from Darren Waller a few years ago. At the time, a part of the fan base was pretty upset, but seeing how things are going lately shows that was the one thing Dave Ziegler and Josh McDaniels got right.
First, let's start with this: They traded Waller for the 100th overall pick in last year's draft. That pick turned out to be Tre Tucker, who showed some glimpse of potential elite wide receiver play. He is very fast and showed he could be a deep ball threat for the Raiders.
If you just looked at Wallers' play the last few years, he was not worth the contract he was given. Before that, sure, as he was one of the three best tight ends in the league. But something happened, and he hasn't been very good since.
And, to pile on top of it, he may be retiring. Yes, you read that right.
Waller told The Athletic's Vic Tafur that he is still undecided on whether he will retire or not.
#Giants TE Darren Waller told @VicTafur that he's still undecided on if he wants to play or retire from the NFL. Waller knows the Giants would probably want a decision before the draft, but he also doesn't want to put a hard deadline on himself.https://t.co/Y2XGzFSu4y pic.twitter.com/FJVFYsdvBM

That can leave the New York Giants in a tough place. Sure, you want the best for him, but at the same time, that could have been the Raiders waiting for Waller and then getting screwed over at the last minute.
