Craig Reynolds was not supposed the be on the field for his touchdown
Eric Seals / USA TODAY NETWORK

Improvisation, it's not just for Saturday Night Live or bored college kids. It's for the Detroit Lions too. Lions running back Craig Reynolds had the biggest moment of his career on Sunday night when he ran a 1-yard touchdown on fourth down. Here's the thing though, he was never supposed to be on the field.

Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown explained the whole thing to his brother Equanimeous on the St. Brown Brothers podcast.

The Lions were going to run one play in which Reynolds would have been involved as a blocker to set up a Goff pass, but the play got changed in the headset and Reynolds was already out there. St. Brown didn't notice until he saw the color of Reynolds cleats.

"I'm waiting for Goff to send me in motion, but I see like behind me, in my peripheral, I see white cleats and  I'm like, David and Jahmyr don't wear white cleats...I see Craig get the ball on a hand off on the 1-yard line and he hit that so hard. I'm like 'you wanted that bad' and he's like 'no one was stopping me."

So there you go, one of the games most important plays came as a the result of messed up personnel. Craig Reynolds was never supposed to be out there. It's a good thing he was though, because he ran for that touchdown pretty dang hard and that's exactly what the Lions needed at the moment.

You can watch the full segment here. St. Brown goes much deeper into the mechanics of the play there.
