Brian Kelly makes huge changes to LSU defensive staff

LSU coach Brian Kelly is making big changes to his defensive staff after an underwhelming season on that side of the ball.

LSU announced Wednesday that four defensive assistants, including defensive coordinator Matt House, have been fired. Safeties coach Kerry Cooks, cornerbacks coach Robert Steeples, and defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey were also let go.

Changes were inevitable for LSU’s defense, which was the biggest issue the team had this season. Despite leading the country with 45.5 points per game, the Tigers allowed 27.8 points per game, and their 409.2 yards per game allowed was 101st in the country. LSU lost only two games, but they gave up 42 points and 55 points in those contests.

Kelly was brought in by LSU to contend for championships. He downplayed those expectations prior to the season, perhaps because he knew his defense was not up to that standard. Without clear improvement, patience may start to wear thin in 2024.
